Announcing Nordic Fiddles & Feet 2011

Camp this year is June 26 to July 3 at Camp Ogontz, New Hampshire. .
Again this year: first-time campers get 10% off; mini-camp dates June 26-28.

Download the brochure and registration form. See the t-shirt design and order your choice of style and color now.

Whether you’re new to Scandinavian dance/music or a perennial camper, come embrace the Fiddles and Feet community that springs to life each summer!

Dance classes include Swedish, Norwegian, and Basics, and are designed for all levels of dancers. Dance Basics introduces beginners to Scandinavian dancing while practicing body-mechanics and skills helpful to all levels of dancers. We change partners often (you need not register with one). Evening parties range from mixers and gammaldans to more esoteric bygdedans, and include dances taught during the day plus your special requests. We dance to live music in every class and at every party!

Music classes are taught at multiple levels for fiddlers, Hardanger fiddlers, nyckelharpists, and singers (one level). We teach “by ear,” so bring a recording device. A syllabus of sheet music is also available. Fiddlers should have at least two years of violin experience in some tradition; no experience is necessary for singing, beginning nyckelharpa, or beginning Hardanger fiddle. The gammaldans band is open to all instruments and voices. We hope to have a few loaner nyckelharpas and Hardanger fiddles available for beginners, but to be certain, bring your own or arrange your own loaner.

Crafts and cultural sessions will be presented by various members of the staff throughout the week.

Staff

Ingrid Strömvall started dancing polskas with Leksands Folkdanslag in the early 1970’s and has taught dance since then. Thomas Johansson was introduced to folk music when he built a nyckelharpa in 1980; he then started dancing and playing with the Borås Spelmanslag, of which he is now the music director. Thomas and Ingrid will teach core dances from eastern Dalarna (polskas from Bingsjö, Boda, Orsa, Rättvik) along with traditional dances from Västergötland that they themselves have researched and documented. Ingrid and Thomas have led the polska dancers in Borås Spelmanslag since 1990. They both received the Big Silver polska medal in 2001. Ingrid, who studied textiles in Hälsingland, leads the county handicraft consultants in Västra Götaland; at camp, besides her dance teaching, she will share her knowledge and interest in crafts sessions.

Sissel Rudningen from Hemsedal in Hallingdal, a dancer since age 7, studied folk dance and folk music at the Rauland Folk Music Academy. Sissel is an A-Class dancer in Norway and has taught extensively in Norway and in the U. S. Her teaching insights and her delightful, friendly manner make her a wonderful model and teacher. In her singing sessions, she’ll share with us the Hallingdal tunes and style that are so much part of her character.

Ulf-Arne Johannessen, from Hallingdal, studied music at the universities of Oslo and Vienna and at the Rauland Folk Music Academy. In 2009 Ulf-Arne won the King’s Cup and hardingfele couple-dance competition at Norway’s annual Landskappleik for his Hallingspringar dance as well as the laus (halling) solo dance. He has taught Hallingspringar both in Norway and in the United States and brings his athleticism and enthusiasm for the dance to us. He is also a third generation button accordion player and a skilled woodcarver.

Thomas Westling is a Riksspelman and a veteran dance fiddler and teacher, with repertoire from all over Sweden and a legendary ability to improvise harmonies. Marit Westling, from Norway, has degrees in music education and performance and is currently the leader of Østerdølenes Spellmannslag in Oslo. We can expect exquisite dance music, exciting tunes, and unparalleled ensemble playing.

Torbjörn Näsbom grew up as a protegé of the great Uppland fiddler Viksta-Lasse, then went on to classical training and a career as an orchestral violinist. While rooted in nyckelharpa tradition, he delights in applying the harpa to a wide range of music. Torbjörn is a phenomenal teacher with something to offer any level of player.

Hilde Kirkebøen is a student of legendary hardingfele player Jens Myro. She is a brilliant, highly danceable fiddler and a clear teacher who brings out the energy and joy in the music she plays. Hilde is also a sparkling dancer who brings the full spirit of the dance to her music.

Roo Lester and Larry Harding are mainstays at NFF, where they share their broad experience and delightful teaching style with us. They are especially welcoming and helpful to new campers and less experienced dancers, while remaining favorite teachers for more experienced dancers as well.

Karin Løberg Code has studied the Hardanger fiddle for over twenty years. While living in Norway, she decided to focus on the music and dance of Valdres and Hallingdal. Karin has taught and performed at various workshops and camps all around the U.S. She lives in Michigan where she teaches "normal" stringed instruments.

Andrea Hoag returns to lead the gammaldans band and to share her wealth of Swedish music. Andrea studied fiddling at Malungs Folkhögskola and with Bingsjö tradition bearer Pekkos Gustaf. With her enthusiasm and her patient manner, she has much to offer musicians at all levels.

Marilyn Butler is a music teacher by profession and an enthusiastic Swedish fiddler. Marilyn will teach the Beginning Fiddle class.
